Rio de Janeiro, June 21: Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has declared a nationwide state of emergency after more than 50 days of protests and road blockades that have disrupted transport and daily life across the country.
In a televised address to the nation on Saturday, Paz said Bolivians could no longer be held "hostage" by the blockades that were preventing people from working, studying, accessing medical care and supporting their families.
The emergency measures, which can remain in place for up to 90 days, were justified by the economic, social and humanitarian impact of the weeks-long protests, the president said. The government plans to use police and the military to reopen key transport routes and ensure the delivery of food, fuel and medicines.At the same time, Paz said his administration would continue to engage with protest groups.
"The doors of the government will remain open to those who want to engage in dialogue in good faith," he said.
