Doha [Qatar], March 29: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) said it has become the first federation to launch a comprehensive strategy (2025-2030) at its Ordinary General Assembly for 2026 held on Thursdayand attended by the president and members of the Board of Directors, club representatives, and a representative of the Qatar Olympic Committee.
The meeting was chaired by Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, QBF President, who expressed deep appreciation for the vital role clubs play in supporting the national teams. He congratulated the Qatari sports community on its distinguished achievements and praised the support of the Qatar Olympic Committee and all clubs in advancing basketball. He also highlighted ongoing preparations for hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup - Qatar 2027, stressing that this global event represents a strategic milestone in Qatari sports history and reflects the nation's advanced standing in hosting major international tournaments.
Al Mughaiseeb commended the constructive cooperation of the clubs, noting that collective efforts directly contributed to tangible successes in recent years, embodying the spirit of teamwork within Qatar's basketball ecosystem.
The Assembly approved the minutes of the previous meeting and reviewed the Federation's achievements in 2025, highlighting the notable progress in local competitions and international participation of national teams. The Assembly also ratified the sports calendar for the 2025-2026 season, which includes a wide range of local tournaments alongside regional and international engagements, underscoring the Federation's commitment to enhancing technical exposure and competitiveness.
Plans for 2026 were also presented, including comprehensive development programs such as training "table officials" in preparation for the 2027 World Cup, launching the federation's official website, and strengthening digital communication through social media platforms.
The meeting confirmed that the Qatar Basketball Federation is the first sports federation to launch a comprehensive strategy (2025-2030), aimed at achieving sports development, ensuring excellence, and promoting Olympic values. The strategy is built on key pillars: sporting excellence through professional development, sporting legacy by fostering partnerships and inspiring future generations, sustainability and innovation by making basketball a model of sustainable sport, and sports culture by building health-conscious and aware generations. This reflects a long-term vision for the game's growth.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of expanding women's basketball in Qatar and supporting the participation of people with disabilities in sports activities, as part of a holistic vision to broaden sports engagement and reinforce inclusivity and equality in line with national directions for community sports development.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the resignation of Board Member Abdulrahman Hamad Al Mannai was also accepted, and Nasser Ajlan Al Kaabi was appointed as a new Board Member by acclamation. Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of QBF and Director of National Teams, affirmed that the past period witnessed significant work and sincere efforts by the Board, committees, and club officials, resulting in notable successes that form a strong foundation for future achievements, strengthening Qatar's basketball at regional and international levels.
Ahmed Yousef Al Darwish, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Competitions Committee, highlighted the comprehensive organization of competitions across all age groups-men, women, youth, juniors, and children's festivals-which raised competitiveness among clubs and expanded participation, laying a solid base for a brighter future for Qatari basketball.
Abdullah Sultan Al Jaber, Board Member and Head of the Women's Committee, noted the remarkable progress in women's basketball through organizing leagues, age-group competitions, and children's festivals, which helped expand the women's basketball base and raise competitiveness, with continued efforts to broaden participation in upcoming seasons.
Ms. Zahra Majid Al Zaidan, Board Member, emphasized that the federation's 2025-2030 strategy represents an ambitious roadmap for developing the sport, built on innovation, sustainability, and participation, with the goal of making Qatari basketball a regional model and a source of inspiration for future generations. She stressed the importance of collective effort to achieve the strategy's objectives and strengthen the sport's standing locally and internationally.
